Yes, this pretty much sums it up.

Fire, Air & Water

My parents, sister, and nieces live in San Diego County, so it is with great concern that I'm watching the news.

Wildfires in So. Ca. are kind of like hurricanes in New Orleans -- horrid and dangerous, but a little routine. So when I first heard there were some flames on the hill, I didn't worry too much.

But these are getting vicious, and my sister just called from her car after having driven through near-zero visibility smoke on the highway.

Mom says they'll be okay and aren't in a danger zone, but I sure wish I could send some of what I'm getting to them!

Yes, it's been raining steadily for about five hours now, and my street is quite flooded. My front yard is underwater, and it's lapping at my steps. I just saw some joker driving on the sidewalk.

Halloween Knitting

So, my younger niece, Isabel, is going as a Pokemon character, Dawn, and I'm getting to knit up that two-tone pink scarf. :-)

Usually, I'm not much help for costumes.

It's coming along pretty well.

The main thing is getting those points on the end, which I'll either knit or crochet when the body of the scarf is done.

Meanwhile, the Saints are up over the Falcons! I'm enjoying it while it lasts.

You see what I have to put up with?

Okay, so first, it's raining again. At first, I didn't think much of it. As I've noted more than once on this blog, it rains a lot in New Orleans. A real lot.

But then, the rain got a little heavier, then a lot heavier.

In a few minutes, I'm staring at a flood. I mean, that's my yard, but that's not my cup that floated into my plants, you know?

Meanwhile, my poor car is parked at the curb, and people don't really slow down, so now I have a totally soaked car which probably got more than a little water inside.

Meanwhile, I'm knitting away on my second sock, and it's looking pretty good...

And I'm measuring it up against the first sock, when I SEE IT!

SON OF A B...oobie.

When I was doing the kitchener stitch, I miss a loop. That just sucks, seriously. I know I can fix it, but ::whine:: it's not the same.

So...I need somebody to blame for my wet car and my crummy sock. Global warming and the football that distracted me while I was doing my sock will do for a start, I suppose.

Nuh.

Oh, and the Saints are crummy too.

thoughts...

We are cups, constantly and quietly being filled.
The trick is, knowing how to tip ourselves over
and let the beautiful stuff out.

Rain

It's an odd thing here in New Orleans, the rain. The Big Easy is a swamp, so there's a lot of rain. Usually, it's warm rain. Usually, it comes down pretty hard, pretty fast. Sometimes, rain clouds wander through alone, so it can be raining on one side of the street and not the other for minutes at a time.

One time, I was garage-saling. One of my favorite things in the world. This was before Katrina, so I had over a dozen houses on that morning's list. It was sunny when I got in the car, then rained on the way to the first house, then sunny while I was actually at the sale, then rainy while I was in the car...all morning! I felt like the Rain Goddess, bidding the clouds to hold on a sec while I tried out the latest round of Corning Ware and bad '70s albums. As I recall, that was also the day I bought my Morticia Addams chair for only $15. So a great day, all 'round.

But today, the clouds were being mischievous, and when I poked my house out my front door, I just saw a few drops of rain on the sidewalk. I bolted for the car...and instantly got soaked. I mean, it's all of about five steps to my car from the front door. And the rain was cold, too!

October is my favorite month in New Orleans, all breezy evenings and falling leaves. I think New Orleanians look forward to Autumn the way most of the world welcomes Spring. Everyone is just so tired of the heat. Cold rain was irritating in the car, sure, but it almost promised a break from the relentless hot-humid of summer, as well as a chance, soon, to wear some of my hand-knitted sweaters!
